We offer after-school tutoring on Mondays and Wednesdays. Or, he can work with me during seminar on Tuesday or Thursday. Is there anything else we can do to help support him?"
We had conferences this week. That means I was at school for 13 hours on Tuesday and Thursday (other than a quick run between school and conferences to clear my head).
I'm really grateful that we've stuck with virtual conferences instead of returning to in-person meetings. By far, the best thing about virtual conferences is that folks have to schedule a time. During our in-person gatherings, it was like a big openhouse with all of us sitting in the cafeteria. It made me a little anxious, not knowing if the grouchy parent stomping down the aisle was looking for me. Maybe it's because I've had a few nasty folks in the past.
An even nicer thing about the virtual conferences is that I can reach out to parents who don't schedule a conference (and probably wouldn't come to in-person gatherings. Whenever I didn't have a conference on my calendar, I called families of students who currently have a D and an F. I think I called 18 families last night.
This is something I wouldn't have been able to do if I was sitting in the cafeteria, and it resulted in EIGHT missing assessments being turned in within eight hours.
I connected a family with some counseling resources too. Hopefully, virtual conferences are here to stay.
Oh, and I woke up to a surprise snow day! No snow on the ground yesterday. This is what it looks like today.
