Lo siento. Tengo mucho hambre. Como estas? Yo se, que tu dia estuve muy ocupado.
I'm not sure to whom I was talking in my dream or why their day was so busy. I guess they made a pretty great lasagne, though, so they have that going for them.
This is the first dream I remember being in a language other than English. I've been trying to teach myself spanish with Duolingo for a while now. (I'm pretty proud of my streak: 1,536 days.) I started because I have a lot of spanish-speaking students. I can even pick up bits and pieces of what they say in the hallways. That's pretty fun.
Duolingo has always been pretty gamified. They have lots of levels to surpass, little games and challenges, ways to "keep score." Because it's part of my morning routine, and I don't miss days, I'm generally at the higher levels.
Lately, they've been running a kind of tournament at the top level. Only the top ten advance, and I'm in the semifinals. For some reason, I've accepted this challenge, but some of these folks are obsessed.
Okay, I'm a bit obsessed too.
Because of this obsession, I've looked for all the little ways to boost my score (without paying for the app). When you finish a level, you get double points for 15 mintues. I try to maximize these double points. I also started doing a few lessons while I wait for my kids to finish track practice and theater rehearsals. And, of course, I can get double points if I do lessons after 5 pm (in addition to before noon).
Yeah, when I write it all out, I'm definitely a bit obsessed. This week, I'm spending like an hour a day practicing spanish. No wonder it's seeping into my dreams. It's kind of a fun challenge though.
I know my students fall into obsessions like this too. Some are okay (our school has a Kpop Club and a Taylor Swift Fan Club). But some make me sad (have you seen the amount of time teens spend on TikTok?).
What are you obsessed with?
*Sorry, I'm not sure how to do the little squiggly line over the "n."
Also, I probably should have saved this for multilingual Friday, but the dream happened last night.
