He likes to curl up like a cinnamon roll resting his head on his hind feet. Somehow, he manages to curl up like this while also snuggling right up against my hip. He sighs deeply an settles in. His breathing eases into a gentle rhythm. Later, if he sleeps deeply enough, he'll probably rumble with a gentle snore.
As I work, I stroke his silky ears or the course patch of short fur on his back. Sometimes he'll peak an eye open, but he often just sleeps beside me like the warmest pillow on the couch.
I'm taking the week off from running to nurse a cranky hamstring. He doesn't understand why he's not getting his usual mileage, but he doesn't seem to be holding it against me. I'm sure he'll drag me a little too hard and fast when we try for an easy couple of miles tomorrow. I hope my hammy is ready.
When he cuddles up against me like this, all chill and peaceful, I have a glimpse of the old dog he'll become soon enough. I'll miss the dog who jumps up and runs to the door on Saturday mornings when I as much as sigh while standing up, eager for a long run.
But he is peaceful, curled up like this, nose twitching as he dreams of bunnies and birds and running through the woods. If I were to take my work to another room, he'd trail behind me in search of a similarly cozy resting spot where we could stay close.
